Royal Star Fish Report

We had a fantastic day of looking offshore that did include plenty of catching on beautiful grade dorado, but twenty yellowfin tuna over two hundred pounds was not to be. All kidding aside we saw very good signs of life, including several different areas that showed promise on good grade tuna, but none of the tuna were interested in what we had to offer. I can say with a reasonable amount of certainty that one spot we tried did have a few of the bigger fish with it, but until we actually have one in the hatch it is all speculation. So the conclusion for our day in the big fish zone is this: it is still early for this area that although began producing good action on big tuna around this time last year, is typically more productive for tuna in November and December. The stage is definitely set with plenty of life around so now we wait, keep working the area when the itinerary permits, and hope that it will start to happen. Not that we haven't had good fishing thus far; we have, but with last year's big fish phenomena, I figure that no matter how good the fishing is elsewhere, our attention is focused on giant yellowfin tuna.

Not any more on this voyage however as our time in the far southern zone is over. We will spend tomorrow working the traditional ridge haunts in search of some anchor action before continuing northward the following day.

We finished our time at Alijos in fine shape although the tuna, for the most part, took the morning off leaving the stage to the "ballslappers" and beautiful grade yellowtail that fortunately occupied angler's time while waiting for the tuna to get with the program. The yellowfin never really did cooperate and that fact, in addition to the weather steadily improving, made the decision to vacate Alijos a natural. So off we go with a nice beginning in the hatch...... Read More

We're plugging away at it now with good mid day, mixed bag action on beautiful quality yellowfin, "ballslapper" grade dorado, and nice yellowtail. We did have a morning of intense consternation as one of our neighbors clobbered the nice tuna while we caught very little observing from the nickel seats. After fighting down the nausea and humiliation, we got with the program around noon however and put in a strong afternoon performance actually surpassing our morning nemesis's action by a......
