Definitely not the beginning one hopes for as we are now faced with consternation rather than satisfaction. In short, we got the business from conditions more than anything as a distinct lack of consistent current had the fish lazy, uninspired, and largely absent compared to the previous day. The good news in this case is that we have time; though my inherent impatience finds little solace in this rationalization.

One thing certain is that the quality is what we came for. The yellowfin tuna sliding over the rail averaged 50 - 80# with a couple of heart breakers sacrificed that were definitely bigger. Combined with a sprinkling of wahoo and dorado it is at least obvious to all anglers that we are fishing in the right place. Triple or quadruple the pace and we are in business. For now it is an exercise in patience and perseverance. As is so often the case - the anglers that achieve in these conditions are those who put in their time at the rail.

The final note on today's results is that this pattern has been prevalent over the past week. A few up days followed by a down day or two - typical fishing is how I would characterize it. So we are hunkered down and settled in content to wait it out at least another day before favoring other options. All the cogs are in place with good working weather and a wealth of time. We'll see if the fish gods feel like giving us a shot tomorrow.

Today's photo features long time Royal Star veteran Willy Cloyes in classic form. Using the bulldozer Shimano Talica 16 and Talus rod combo, Willy made short work of his first seventy five pound class yellowfin tuna of the trip. There will be many more to come for Willy. He is an angler who employs the above mentioned strategy to perfection, and always has a good time doing it.
