Fish Report for 8-17-2007
Another fantastic day on the offshore albacore grounds with sights and sounds similiar to yesterday only in much improved weather conditions. With brilliant overhead sunlight mid day, and crystal clear, blue water, the visual of whales and fish demolishing bait balls was again spectacular enhancing yesterday's experience by adding incredible detail to the process. Not to get to National Geographic on you all, but studying the process as huge whales lined up on their prey, opened their cavernous mouths, and erupted through the densly packed bait with thousands of individual sardines and anchovies pouring out the sides is a sight to behold. Factor in the thousands of clearly visible albacore and tuna mopping up the scraps as we would ease Royal Star into the melee and one can only imagine the adrenaline charge. On three different occasions today, I saw a thirty pound class albacore separate from the pack, rise to the surface, and slurp down a yellowtail style surface iron as we slid up on a spot of fish crashing around a whale. That, while thousands of fish continued to maul the bait unfazed by our presence and anglers hooked albacore right and left as a relative few broke off from the bait ball to savor our larger variety sardines. Wow.
I know it's an old, worn out cliche, but this is what it is all about. This is what an angler hopes to experience when he/she ventures an offshore or summer long range voyage. This is why the investement in time, effort, and finances is worth it. Just the chance of experiencing such action, living such an incredible moment is why it is worth it.
I could certainly continue but must end as our new day is beginning. With our full quota of albacore in the hatch, we relocated today searching for exotic species in a new zone down the beach. As we have plenty of quantity on board, just a little color and/or variety will add up to a "perfect" trip. Regardless of how it turns out, you won't find us complaining as the weather is calm, conditions are beautiful, and good fortune has shined upon us.

8-16-2007Well our day of reckoning finally arrived as the albacore that have been so confounding in their not biting, bluefin tuna like behavior this season, began acting like their old selves. At day's end yesterday, I made the comment that I had more fun fishing albacore than I have in a long time; not just because they were biting, but beacuse the surface show was so incredible and the set up reminiscent of the way I fondly recall albacore fishing...... We started off on the right foot today clearing Pt. Loma by noon enroute for the local albacore grounds that showed good promise according to reports from the morning fishing. A short few hours later, we were hanging on in choppy seas but gladly enduring the challenge while pulling on beautiful twenty five to thirty five pound albacore. The big difference today was the attitude of all the fish we found that displayed the old albacore attributes we all cherish...... Read More
