Royal Star

We could not have scripted a more perfect day of inside yellowtail action beginning with a quick morning hit that got the juices flowing followed by a three hour lull that included a little travel time to relax and enjoy the fantastic weather and magnificent scenery. It was the late afternoon/early evening fishing that stole the show however with a caliber of action and quality of yellowtail reminiscent of the "good old days". A school of twenty five to thirty pound class yellowtail found us on the anchor and erupted into a cauldron of churning backs slashing and tearing the surface to shreds while biting our baits and jigs with complete abandon. After the initial outrageous surface show, the big yellows settled in around us and continued biting well until all anglers had plenty of fish to satisfy their every desire. In fact, many anglers were well satisfied early on with five or six of the beautiful twenty five pound class yellowtail plenty for their larder and opted to catch and release for the remainder of the bite; a much better option than keeping more than one requires and searching for alternatives after the fact. I congratulate and sincerely appreciate the forward thinking anglers who are becoming a more significant element on all long range fishing trips.
Now for the final day, that once again will be spent working north hoping, against formidable odds, to find something floating or any form of quality offshore fish to work on before calling it a successful voyage in the late afternoon and heading for the barn.

At 1330 hrs yesterday, I was already formulating the day's report in my head explaining how this island had seen better days and we were hastily traveling into the coast with no other options available. Before any of this became fact however, Captain Toussaint and I (functioning as chief engineer this voyage) believed there was one final area to look over before we officially declared Guadalupe a bust. As fate would have it, this final area proved to be the...... Read More
