All We Needed

After the third Hi's Tackle Charter aboard the Royal Polaris, skipper Billy Santiago Jr. parked the rig at Fisherman's Landing July 25. His 36 anglers had a mixed catch of yellowtail and tuna, including four bluefin and two halibut. He summed up the trip:

"We fished offshore on the way down," he said, "and we saw lots of albacore but not many of them were biting. Further south, we found good schools of yellowfin of 18 to 30 pounds, and got some of those.

"We had a good day of fishing at Cedros Island. We got all the yellowtail we needed. Then, on the way home, we fished inshore for rockfish and reds."

The biggest fish was an ineligible yellowtail of 44 pounds, caught by Dick Cook of Placentia. He got it with a sardine on 40-pound line.

Greg Edmonston of Fountain Valley won first place for a 34-pound albacore. Oscar Valenzuela of Santa Ana was second, for a 33.4-pound yellowtail, and John Medler of Naperville, IL won third place for a 33-pound yellowtail.
