Vagabond returned after a three-day trip with more late-season large albacore August 5. Mike Lackey skippered the trip with 23 anglers, the Joe's Freight Charter.

"We had excellent kelp fishing and one-stop fishing for limits of albacore," said Mike at the Pt. Loma Sportfishing scales. It was about five p.m. They came up boiling, and I looked out the door and thought, ???This is different!' It was just like albacore fishing; just throw bait and hang on."

Lackey noted his anglers also got some good fishing for dorado and yellowtail under paddies.

Tom Dillard of Las Vegas won first place for a 37-pound albacore. He said it took a sardine on a 3/0 hook tied to 30-pound Soft Steel line. He used a TLD 15-30 rental outfit with a Seeker 670 rod.

William Combs of Pioche, NV won second place for a 36.4-pounder, and Jim Armstrong of Las Vegas was third, for a 35.8-pound albacore.
