Andy Cates skippered Red Rooster III home to H&M Landing after a seven-day trip with 25 anglers, sponsored by Angler's Center and chartermastered by long-time long ranger Sonny Jones of Santa Ana. "We got daily limits on yellowtail on the first day," commented Sonny, "averaging 20 pounds and up to 25. The Rocks had more sharks than you can imagine. You had about ten minutes to get your wahoo to the boat, because the sharks were fighting over them. The skinnies bit mostly on sardines with wire. On the last day we got some better yellowfin about 300 miles down.

"I got my best dorado, about a 30-pounder, on a 'dine and 20-pound line, so I really had to finesse that fish."

Scott Goodwin of Corona won first place for a 50.8-pound yellowfin tuna. He said it took a sardine on a 2/0 Mustad Demon hook tied to 30-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon and 65-pound Power Pro spectra. He fished with an Avet LX reel and a Calstar 700 H rod.

Jeff Peck of Newport Beach won second place for a 38.8-pound wahoo he picked off with a mackerel on a 2/0 Hoodlum hook by Mustad. Sam Sombounkhane of La Habra won third place for his 38.2-pound wahoo, and chartermaster Jones trolled up a jacket-winning 54-pound yellowfin. The four posed for a lineup shot.
